# 10.3 GRID RECORDING MODE

10. THE SEQUENCER
Red [TRIG] keys indicate note trigs, and yellow [TRIG] keys indicate lock trigs. Unlit [TRIG] keys indicate
steps that do not contain any trigs. Read more about parameter locks in section “10.10.1 PARAMETER
LOCKS” on page 44. The method of adding trigs to the sequencer depends on the active record
mode – GRID RECORDING or LIVE RECORDING. Note trigs can also be added using STEP EDIT.
10.3 GRID RECORDING MODE
GRID RECORDING is a method of composing where you use the [TRIG] keys to add trigs.
1.	 Press [RECORD] to enter GRID RECORDING mode. The [RECORD] key lights up red to indicate that
GRID RECORDING mode is active.
2.	 Select the track to which you want to add trigs by pressing and holding [TRACK] and then one of the
[TRIG] keys. A white [TRIG] key indicates the active track.
3.	 Place note trigs on the sequencer using the sixteen [TRIG] keys. To add a lock trig, press [FUNC] +
[TRIG]. Quickly pressing the [TRIG] key of any of the trigs entered will remove the trig. Pressing a
[TRIG] key and holding it, prepares the trig for editing, rather than removing it.
4.	 Select another track, and add note trigs. Repeat the procedure for all the tracks you want to use.
5.	 Press [PLAY] to listen to the sequence.
Add micro timing to a note trig by pressing and holding the [TRIG] key, and then pressing [LEFT]/[RIGHT].

Set the retrig speed by pressing and holding the [TRIG] key while navigating to TRIG PAGE 1 and make the
desired retrig settings. For more information, please see “10.7 RETRIGS” on page 42, and “11.1 TRIG” on
page 50.
If the pattern contains more than 16 steps, select the pattern page you want to edit by pressing the [PAGE]
key. A fully lit <PATTERN PAGE> LED shows the active pattern page.
Press [RECORD] to exit the GRID RECORDING mode.
•	 If your pattern has more than one page you can easily select which page you want to edit.
In GRID RECORDING mode, press and hold [PAGE], and then press [UP] and choose
SELECT PAGE. While still holding [PAGE], press [TRIG 1–16] to select the active page for
editing. You can also cycle through the pages with the [LEFT] and [RIGHT] keys while
holding [PAGE].
•	 You also have the possibility to select which pages of your pattern you want the sequencer
to play and loop. The selected pages are then looped on playback.
In GRID RECORDING mode, press and hold [PAGE], and then press [DOWN] and choose
LOOP PAGES. While still holding [PAGE], press [TRIG 1–16] to select which pattern pages
you want to play and loop. Green [TRIG] keys shows the selected pages. The [TRIG 1–16]
keys corresponds to pattern page 1–16. Press [PAGE] + [NO] to resume normal playback
of all pages in the pattern.
•	 If you use an external MIDI controller to record to Tonverk’s MIDI tracks, the sequencer
receives data on the Auto MIDI channel and records on the active track. For more informa­
tion, please see “17.2.3 CHANNELS” on page 75.
•	 All trigs placed on a track or subtrack can be shifted forward or backward on the sequenc­
er. While in GRID RECORDING mode, press [FUNC] + [LEFT]/[RIGHT] to move the trigs
backward or forward.
•	 In GRID RECORDING mode, press [TRIG] + [YES] to preview a specific trig. The preview
includes any parameter locks you have placed on that trig.
•	 When in STEP EDIT, press [KEYBOARD] + [YES] to preview a specific note. The preview
includes any parameter locks you have placed on that note or the step.
•	 With CHORD mode enabled, adding a trig in GRID RECORDING mode or using STEP EDIT
adds all notes in the selected chord.
10.3.1 STEP EDIT
STEP EDIT is part of the GRID RECORDING mode and gives you a practical way to add and remove
notes/trigs on specific sequencer steps using the [KEYBOARD].
1.	 In normal playback mode, press [STEP EDIT].
2.	 Press the [TRIG] key to where you want to add/remove notes. The [TRIG] key turns green.
3.	 Use the [KEYBOARD] to add/remove notes to the selected trig.

4.	 Press [STEP EDIT] again to exit STEP EDIT.
•	 You can also access STEP EDIT when you are in GRID RECORDING mode. The proce­
dure is the same, but you need to press and hold the selected [TRIG] key while you are
adding/removing notes. Also, notes added this way replace any previously added notes
on that trig.
•	 You can also use an external MIDI keyboard to add notes using STEP EDIT.
10.3.2 SEQUENCE LANE
To make it easier to edit a pattern, you can use the Sequence lane functionality to select which se­
quencer events you want to view and interact with using the [TRIG] keys. This is especially useful when
you have recorded a sequence and want to edit it with more precision. In GRID RECORDING mode, the
chosen sequence lane is displayed at the top of the screen, next to the to the sequencer pages.
1.	 Press [FUNC] + [UP] to open the SEQUENCE LANE menu.
2.	 Use the [UP]/[DOWN] keys to select which sequence lane you want to view and interact with.
•	 NOTES lets you view and interact with Note trigs only. Trigs that contain Note trigs are shown
with red [TRIG] keys. Trigs that contain Lock trigs are shown with faint yellow [TRIG] keys.
Pressing an empty [TRIG] key (or a [TRIG] key that contains a Lock trig) adds a Note trig. Press­
ing a [TRIG] key that contains a Note trig, removes it. Pressing a [TRIG] key that contains both a
Note trig and a Lock trig only removes the Note trig.
•	 P-LOCKS Lets you view and interact only with Lock trigs (with or without parameter locks). Trigs
that contain Lock trigs are shown with blinking yellow [TRIG] keys. Trigs that contain Note trigs
are shown with faint red [TRIG] keys. Trigs that contain both Note trigs and Lock trigs are shown
with blinking red [TRIG] keys. Pressing an empty [TRIG] key adds a Lock trig. Pressing a [TRIG]
key that contains a Lock trig, removes it. Pressing a [TRIG] key that contains both a Lock trig
and a Note trig only removes the Lock trig.
•	 NOTES + P-LOCKS This is the default option and it lets you view and interact with both Note
trigs and Lock trigs (with or without parameter locks). Trigs that contain Note trigs are shown
with red [TRIG] keys. Trigs that contain Lock trigs are shown with yellow [TRIG] keys. Trigs that
contain both Note trigs and Lock trigs are shown with blinking red [TRIG] keys. Pressing an
empty [TRIG] key adds a Note trig. [FUNC] + [TRIG] adds a Lock trig. Pressing a [TRIG] key
that contains a Note trig removes it. Pressing a [TRIG] key that contains a Lock trig converts it
to a Note trig. Pressing a [TRIG] key that contains both a Lock trig and a Note trig removes both
the Note trig and the Lock trig.
3.	 Press [NO] to exit the SEQUENCE LANE menu.

10.4 LIVE RECORDING MODE
LIVE RECORDING mode is the second method of adding trigs to the tracks. In this recording mode, the
[TRIG] keys are played in real-time to input trigs to the tracks. You can also use KEYBOARD mode to add
note trigs chromatically. It is also possible to enter parameter locks in real time. Trigs input in LIVE RE­
CORDING mode can be automatically quantized or not. Non-quantized trigs can be quantized after they are
recorded by using the QUANTIZE menu that is accessed by pressing [FUNC] + [TRIG]. For more informa­
tion, please see “10.8 QUANTIZE MENU” on page 43.
1.	 Press and hold [RECORD], then press [PLAY] to enter LIVE RECORDING mode. (Press [PLAY] twice
while keeping the [RECORD] key pressed to activate/deactivate automatic quantization.) The se­
quencer starts to play, and the [RECORD] key starts to flash red.
2.	 Press the [TRIG] keys to add trigs in real time. You can also use the [KEYBOARD] to play the active
track chromatically. If the active track has a Subtracks SRC machine assigned, you can play all eight
Subtracks by pressing the [SUBTRACKS] keys. Any changes to the PARAMETER page´s settings
